House System
House System
The house system is based on the Harry Potter storyline- the entire school is divided up into 4 houses and there are competitions throughout the year to earn house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points wins the house cup. The cup is formally named the Dobay Cup after Alex Dobay, the student who grassroots-started the house system during his battle with cancer and ultimately passed away the summer after graduation.
The houses are named after things in Hawken’s history:
Chester (named after Chester township where the upper school campus technically is located)
Bolton (named after Frances Bolton who’s sons were some of the first Hawken students and who deeply supported the work of the school, including donating the land the lower school currently sits on),
Ansel (the road where the first schoolhouse was located in Cleveland)
Mather (named after the original owners of the current Gries Center building, our urban campus, which signifies our connection to the City of Cleveland).
